So why did we choose silk to work with?
Even though you may think that using silk for a baby accessories is pure luxury and high maintenance, it is not entirely true. The answer is very simple. And I will list the benefits here. 1. Silk is a natural fiber that allows skin to breathe. Ddupioni silk (meaning "double") is produced when two or more silkworms spin their cocoons too closely together. The fabric is made with a tight plain weave, fine warp yarns and heavier, slubbed filling yarns that form prominent, irregular crosswise ribs. The fabric is light to medium in weight, with a crisp, scrunchy hand, a rough, uneven texture and, generally, a very shimmery luster. 2. Silk is safe! It doesn't slip in the rings. Due to it's naturally irregular texture it keeps the rings tight and keeps your adjustments from slipping. Not to mention it drapes very pretty around the rings.
3. Silk is Strong! Sporting the highest tensile strength of any of the natural fibers used in textiles today, a single layer of dupion silk can easily hold about 30-40lbs. Sweetsation Therapy designs slings combining two layers. And double and triple stiching make it, well, almost indestructible. 4. Silk is hard to stain! Silk's smooth surface does not attract dirt and is easily cleaned. Yes, it's hard to believe, but although it is a delicate care fabric, silk does not hold on to stains the way that a lot of fibers do. This is partly because it is minimally absorbent, so wet stains don't 'soak in' the way they do with fibers like cotton. Due to it's unique resistance to dirt it does not need to be cleaned frequently. 5. Silk is easy to care for. It holds its shape, resists wrinkles. Silk will not mildew except in extreme conditions. Moths don't care for it.
6. Silk is so naturally shiny and beautiful. Everyone will notice and comment on your sling. Some of the colors we use are "colorchange". They combine 2 colors in weaving and change their color depending on the angle. It definitely adds something extra to the depth of all the beautiful colors we use.
Care: For the best results dry clean recommended, but cold wash on gentle cycle works almost just as good. After washing, stretch and dry your sling on a line. Ironing recommended for the original shiny smooth look. Dry iron.
